On this page you can view the
movies about The Overbrook Foundation grantee, DreamYard. Be patient,
the movies make take a few moments to start.
In May 2005, A&E channel's nationally televised "Breakfast with
the Arts" profiled the DreamYard Project and The ACTION Project,
the organization's innovative, arts and civic engagement program
for Bronx teenagers. Jason Duchin, Co-Executive Director, and
Tanya Gallo, ACTION Program Director, discussed DreamYard and
the ACTION Project's mission and the impact its arts education
programs are having on Bronx public schools and local communities.
ACTION participants Joseph Quinones, Virginia Barretto, Christian
Toro, and Tyler Toro discussed their involvement in the ACTION
project and how the arts have impacted their lives. The program
concluded with the participants acting out original monologues
on peer pressure.
DreamYard is an innovative organization that helps transform Bronx
based schools and communities through the power of arts education.
DreamYard offers programs that provide an educational pathway
for students from K-12th grade, a pathway in which the arts are
an integral part of how children learn. Its staff of professional
artists create meaningful experiences through which students engage
with the world around them, learn in new ways and think of themselves
as active participants in their communities.
The ACTION Project is a 4-year arts and civic engagement program
for Bronx teenagers. The ACTION Project uses the arts to develop
young people as effective social leaders and active civic participants
in their communities. The four-year goal is to have participants
involved in the construction of community-based arts projects
that educate around an issue, ask a question, provoke and inspire
deep critical thinking, and elicit a change in their community.
ACTION is hosted by the Bronx Museum and Lehman College. Each
year takes place over 25 Saturday sessions and a five-week, intensive
summer session. It is DreamYard's hope that the ACTION Project
will become a replicable model for other communities and young
people.
