Ioby.org, the innovative online micro-philanthropic organization and Overbrook grantee, continues to expand the depth and breadth of its influence, and in turn, national awareness of environmental issues.
It is raising $26,000 to fund a story covering the March 2013 ExxonMobil oil spill in Mayflower, Arkansas. The spill caused the leakage of over 400,000 tons of tar sands oil, and forced the evacuation of 22 homes. The Mayflower story has national implications: the Keystone XL pipeline would carry the same type of unconventional oil from Canada to Texas. But in this age of shrinking newsrooms, few media outlets have been covering this important story from a small town in Arkansas, and it's a disaster in danger of being ignored.
The project will fund an in-depth reporting of the story by Pulitzer Prize winning InsideClimateNews and the Arkansas Times You can read more about the details on the campaign page: https://ioby.org/project/muckraking-mayflower-oil-spill (and donate!).
It is a great example of using national attention to cover a local issue, that, like many ioby projects, is under the radar of the larger national environmental community, and The Overbrook Foundation is proud to support its work.
