Greening the Great White Way

There's a new Times Square attraction in town - and this time it's not just for the tourists. The Times Square Alliance has partnered with Mayor Bloomberg, the Alcoa Foundation, and Big Belly Solar to install 30 new compacting trash cans from 42nd to 47th streets. These solar-powered compactors can hold up to 5 times as much waste as a normal trash can. When they're full, a sensor alerts personnel that the trash is ready for pick-up. Now that's worth a standing ovation.
